Bridge Construction Programme
Implementation Staff 3x
Period of Time
01/1986 until 10/2000
EUR 9.00 Million (DM 17.5 Million)
The Bridge Programme included the selection of bridge sites and the planning, design and implementation of the construction of 125 bridges.
Two different types of bridge designs were used; The corrugated steel plate structures using almost only labour intensive techniques and
conventional reinforced concrete structures where high water flows or founding conditions prevailed (20% of all bridges)
Most of the works were carried out by labour intensive techniques. The designs allowed for maximum use of labour-based methodologies.
Services included the overall project planning, design, preparation of work programmes, tender documentation and evaluation for selected bridges as well as implementation activities, reporting, budgeting costing etc.
Since the bridges were distributed throughout Zimbabwe, a high level of management organisation and coordination was required to ensure proper controls and resource management.
The key staff comprised a bridge coordinator and two resident engineers.
